Web hosting is the storage and serving of all the files that make up a web site on a computer called a web server. Web servers maintain a permanent connection to the Internet so your web site is always available. Hosting is generally provided by companies that specialize in this service. Pricing and plans vary widely based on the services offered and the hosting provider. E-mail is generally included in all hosting plans.
Available types of web hosting:
| Dedicated hosting | all resources of a web server dedicated to one site/account – most expensive type of hosting |
| Shared hosting | many sites share one web server and its resources – least expensive type of hosting |
| Virtual Private Hosting (VPS) | many sites share one web server, but each account has resources allocated in a self-contained environment – less expensive than dedicated, more expensive than shared |
Key web hosting features:
| Storage | The space allocated for the storage of files, images, video etc. Usually measured in MB, GB or TB. |
| Bandwidth | The allowance for the data transferred per month. Depends on how many visitors your site has. Usually measured in MB, GB or TB. |
| Operating System | The operating system and software the server runs. Usually either UNIX/LINUX or Windows |
| Uptime Guarantee | The amount of time your site is available per month, expressed as a percentage, look for 99.9% at least, 99.999% is even better. |
| Support | Most hosts offer 24/7 e-mail support and some level of phone support. Phone support should be available. Check response times on e-mail support if possible. |
| Programming Languages/Databases | The functionality of your site will be programmed in a particular language, hence the host must support it. |
| Check number of accounts allowed, if web mail is available and available mail protocols (IMAP or POP). E-mail lists are also a consideration. | |
| E-commerce | Secure Socket Layer (SSL), Pre-installed e-commerce software |
| Facility | Servers, connection to backbone, back-up power |
| Other Features | Statistics, site back-ups, control panel |

E-mail Options
Web hosts offer e-mail hosting as part of their hosting plans. Most hosts offer more than adequate features for all your e-mail needs. Some terms to be familiar with:
§ POP3 – Post Office Protocol. The protocol used by mail programs to retrieve messages from a mail server.
§ IMAP – Internet Message Access Protocol. A newer protocol used by mail programs to retrieve messages from a mail server. Allows for advanced synchronization features to be implemented.
§ Web mail – A web-based interface for accessing e-mail. Convenient when you are not at your main computer
§ E-mail only hosting – Some companies choose to have their e-mail hosted with a separate company that can provide more service and support relating to e-mail, such as configuring Exchange servers.
